Portland’s location on the shores of Big Rideau Lake, the largest lake in the Rideau Waterway, led to it being a major boating centre. Originally known as “The Landing”, many of the homes built by these early settlers can still be admired today. Nearby Colonel By Island, operated by Parks Canada, offers a hiking trail and picnic facilities.
Rideau Ferry
Rideau Ferry was first called Oliver’s Ferry after John Oliver, a Scottish settler in South Elmsley. He operated the
